Published On: October 01, 2024 - Israeli soldiers have finally started ground raids into southern Lebanon. Israel wants to push Hezbollah north of the Litani river to create a buffer zone.Southern Lebanon is likely to see the heaviest fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. The area south of the Litani river covers about 850 square kilometres and is home to approximately 200,000 residents, 75% of whom are Shia Muslims, with the remaining 25% comprising Sunni Muslims, Druze, and Christians. So, will Israel able to push Hezbollah beyond this buffer zone? What happened the last time Israel launched a ground invasion of Lebanon in 2006? Will this be a fight to the finish? Is this the start of a full-fledged ground invasion of southern Lebanon or will these be limited in scope?
