Supreme Court Upholds Section 6A: What Does It Mean For Migrants to Assam?

In this historic verdict, the Supreme Court has once again affirmed the Constitutional validity of Section 6A, asserting its role in addressing illegal migration in Assam. Section 6A provides that those who have come to Assam on or after January 1st, 1966 but before March 25th 1971, from specified territories including Bangladesh and since then have been residents of Assam must register themselves under Sector 18 for Citizenship. In effect, Section 6 A fixes March 25, 1971 as the cut-off date for granting citizenship to Bangladeshi migrants in Assam.
