These are the first assembly elections taking place in over a decade and five years after the historic nullification of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, which also made J&K a Union Territory. Statehood restoration remains a critical issue during these elections, a commitment for which has been made by PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah as well as the NC-Congress alliance in the run-up to the elections in the region. While BJP, PDP, and NC-Congress alliance remain the key players, independents are likely to play a pivotal role in post-poll dynamics.
