Iconic author Salman Rushdie has for long been in the crosshairs of Islamist fundamentalists. The publishing of his controversial book The Satanic Verses in 1988 invited the wrath of extremists and a fatwa was issued against him next year. In 2022, Rushdie was attacked by an assailant in New York. Now his attacker has been charged with providing material support to the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah, as per an indictment unsealed this week.
