Published on: October 01, 2024 - Sonam Wangchuk and around 150 fellow protesters were detained by Delhi Police at the Singhu border while the former were marching peacefully towards the national capital. The group was advocating for Ladakh’s inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which grants special autonomous status to tribal regions. Their peaceful protest was met with detentions following the imposition of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, which bans large gatherings and protests in several parts of Delhi until October 5. Wangchuk and the detained activists, including elderly individuals in their 80s and several Army veterans, launched an indefinite fast soon after being detained near the Singhu border on the outskirts of Delhi. In a video posted on social media, Wangchuk expressed his concern over the arrest of senior citizens peacefully advocating for Ladakh’s future.
