Agniveer: Fact & Fiction

Published On: July 10, 2024 - The Agnipath scheme was announced by the Indian government in June 2022. Since its inception it has faced criticism. The criticism has been regarding job security, pension benefits, and the overall effectiveness of the armed forces. In the just concluded Parliament session, there was a heated debate between opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh over the compensation paid to the Agniveers. 57 countries – including Russia, Singapore Turkey, UAE, Greece, Sweden, to name a few, have military service from 9 months to 2 years .. so it not a new thing. Even earlier, India had Short Service Commission. Why is this creating so much controversy?
